habitat and biology
Living in both the oceanic and pelagic zones, these creatures are often seen in association with seaweed and other drifting objects. They feed on jellyfish, as well as other zooplankton and small fish.

The first dorsal fin has 9 to 11 rays, the second dorsal fin has one spine and 23 to 28 rays, the anal fin has three spines and 23 to 28 rays, the pectoral fin has 17 to 20 rays, the body is firm, deep, and compressed with a depth of 1.8 to 2.4 times its standard length, the eye is usually smaller than the snout, and the pectoral fin is equal to or shorter than the head length. The teeth in both jaws are small and pointed, not laterally flattened.
