Pomacentrus pavo is superficially similar in appearance to Chromis viridis, as seen on page 238; however, it can be distinguished by its more elongate shape and the small dark spot on the back of its opercle, and it occasionally appears in livebait catches.

habitat and biology
This species is typically seen near coral formations, often in sandy lagoons at depths of up to 16 m. It is usually found in small to large schools and feeds on plankton and filamentous algae.

This fish has a dorsal fin with 13 spines and 12-14 rays, an anal fin with 2 spines and 12-14 rays, 17 pectoral rays, a body depth of 2.4-2.6 in standard length, a compressed body, a preopercle that is scaled and serrated, a long pelvic fin, elongated dorsal and anal fin rays, and pointed caudal lobes.
