habitat and biology
This species is typically found on the edge of reefs in clear outer reefs or channels with strong currents. It feeds on zooplankton and is often found in groups of small individuals near the heads of branching corals.
distinctive characters
The dorsal fin of adults has nine spines and 19-20 rays, the anal fin has three spines and 18-19 rays, the pectoral rays are 16, and the pelvic fins have one spine and three rays. The body depth of adults is 2.3 times the standard length, and the caudal spine is about four times the head length. The caudal fin of juveniles is slightly rounded, while that of adults is truncated with lobe tips slightly projecting.
