Tawny nurse shark

Four individuals of Nebrius ferrugineus, ranging in total length from 134-226 cm, were taken by hand line and longline by the R.V. "Farumas" during the reef fish resources survey (Anderson and Ahmed, 1993, p.55). This species is a tough and hardy shark that readily survives in captivity; N. concolor Ruppell, 1837 is a synonym.

habitat and biology
This species is found in shallow waters from the inter-tidal zone to depths of 70 m or more. It inhabits coral and rocky reefs, lagoons, and sand flats, and feeds on a variety of bottom invertebrates, corals, and small fishes. It is mainly nocturnal, spending its days in caves or under overhangs. It is ovoviviparous, with at least four young per uterus.

The body has no ridges, the caudal fin is about 30% of the total length, the pectoral, dorsal and anal fins have angular apices, and the teeth are compressed with a moderate central cusp and 4-6 smaller cusps on the sides.
