Meiacanthus smithi was first discovered by scientists during Dr. Hans Hass' "Xarifa" expedition to the Maldives, and is unique among fishes in having poison glands associated with a greatly enlarged and grooved pair of lower canine teeth.

habitat and biology
It is believed that they subsist on small worms and crustaceans.
distinctive characters
The dorsal fin has 3-5 spines and 24-26 soft rays, the anal fin has 2 spines and 15-17 soft rays, the pectoral fin has 13-15 rays, and there is a lateral line present with the middle rays of the caudal fin being the longest.
