The Emperor Red Snapper, Lutjanus sebae, can easily be recognized by its distinctive shape and coloration, as well as its higher number of soft dorsal and anal rays than other Lutjanus species. It is rather rare in the Maldives, with very few published records of its occurrence.

Reddish or pink. Smaller specimens with 3 darker bands on sides. The first runs forward across the head, the second down the centre of the body and the third curves back rom the dorsal fin to the lower part of the caudal fin.

habitat and biology
This species is typically found in the vicinity of coral reefs, usually in the vicinity of sand flats. Adults can be found at depths ranging from 10 to 100 m or more. Juveniles have been observed in mangrove areas, where they feed on fish, crustaceans, and cephalopods.

This species has a dorsal fin with 10 or 11 spines and 15 or 16 rays, an anal fin with 3 spines and 8 rays, a pectoral fin with 17 rays, and a body that is very deep, measuring 2.1-2.4 in standard length. Additionally, the scale rows below the lateral line ascend obliquely, and the caudal fin is slightly forked.
