Lutjanus bohar is perhaps the most common large snapper in the Maldives, and is a popular food fish, despite its somewhat chewy flesh. This species has been implicated in ciguatera poisoning in other countries, but not in the Maldives.

habitat and biology
This species of fish can be found in coral reefs, lagoons and outer reefs, usually at depths between 10 and 70 meters. It is usually solitary, but sometimes it can be seen in large schools. Its diet consists mainly of small fishes, crustaceans and cephalopods.
distinctive characters
This species has a dorsal fin with 10 spines and 13-14 rays, an anal fin with 3 spines and 8 rays, and a pectoral fin with 16-17 rays. Its body is moderately deep, measuring 2.4-2.9 inches in standard length, and it has a prominent groove or pit in front of the eye containing the nostrils. The caudal fin is slightly emarginate.
