Lagocephalus sceleratus is one of the largest species of the family Lagocephalidae and is not commonly found in the Maldives. It is a highly poisonous fish, with its skin, liver, and particularly its ovaries containing an extremely potent alkaloid poison called tetrodotoxin.

Dorsal surface greenish with dark brown or black spots. Belly white. A broad silver band along sides from mouth to caudal fin. A silver blotch in front of eye. Pectoral base and inside of gill opening black.

habitat and biology
Occasionally venturing close to reefs, but mainly inhabiting pelagic and oceanic waters.
distinctive characters
The dorsal fin has 10-12 rays, the anal fin has 8-11 rays, and the pectoral fin has 15-18 rays. The body is almost square in cross-section and elongated and depressed. Spinules on the back extend past the dorsal fin almost to the caudal fin, and the caudal fin is moderately lunate.
