Hypoatherina temminckii

Hypoatherina temminckii is occasionally used as bait, and fishermen sometimes refer to it by its Dhivehi name, 'Keravalha'. It was previously recorded as Allenetta barnesi in the Catalogue of Fishes of the Maldives Vol. 1, page 24.

habitat and biology
This species is commonly seen in large schools close to the coast during the day, and they migrate to open water to feed at night.
distinctive characters
The premaxillary bone has a long and slender ascending process, while its lateral process is short and wide. The dentary bone is highly elevated posteriorly, and there are 21-25 gill rakers on the lower limb of the first gill arch. Additionally, the pectoral fin has 14-18 rays.
