habitat and biology
Typically inhabiting coral reefs or rocky surfaces, and sometimes on sandy substrates at depths of up to 70 m, this species mainly feeds on crustaceans, with occasional consumption of fish and squids.
distinctive characters
This species has a dorsal fin with 11 spines and 16-17 rays, an anal fin with 3 spines and 8 rays, and a pectoral fin with 17-19 rays. Its body depth is 2.8-3.3 in standard length, and the ventral edge of its maxilla has a "step" in subadults. The preopercle is rounded with a slight notch, below which the serrae are enlarged. The third or fourth dorsal spine is longer than the longest dorsal soft ray, and the caudal fin is rounded.
