Epinephelus fuscoguttatus is often confused with E. polyphekadion (previously known as E. microdon), as they both have similar characteristics such as fewer pectoral fin rays (16 or 17), a smooth convex dorsal head profile, interspinous dorsal fin membranes that are less deeply incised, and a less reddy-brown colouration.

habitat and biology
This species is typically found on shallow coral reefs, reaching depths of up to 60 meters. Adults are usually located in caves, while juveniles may be seen in seagrass habitats. Its diet consists of fish, crustaceans, and cephalopods.
