Chrysiptera biocellata is sometimes confused with C. unimaculata, but they can be distinguished by their different habitats, as C. unimaculata lives in more exposed areas. This species was previously recorded under the genus Abudefduf in the Catalogue of Fishes of the Maldives, Vol. 1, page 106.

habitat and biology
This species is typically found in lagoons close to the shoreline, among rubble, around rocky outcrops, and in sandy areas at depths of up to 5 meters. It can be seen alone or in groups, and feeds on large benthic organisms.

This fish has a dorsal fin with 13 spines and 12-14 rays, an anal fin with 2 spines and 13-14 rays, 17-19 pectoral rays, a body depth of 2.2-2.5 in standard length, a compressed body, a pectoral fin shorter than the pelvic fin, the first ray of the pelvic fin elongated, opercular bones that are not serrated, and dorsal spines that gradually increase in length to the end.
