Chromis ternatensis is sometimes used as bait in Maldives for pole and line fishing, although it is not usually targeted by bait fishermen and is usually taken incidentally while fishing for other species.

habitat and biology
This species inhabits coral reefs, congregating in the midwater region between 2-15 meters. Its diet consists of zooplankton.

This species has a dorsal fin with 12-13 spines and 10-12 rays, an anal fin with 2 spines and 10-12 rays, 16-18 pectoral rays, a body depth of 1.8-1.9 times its standard length, membranes of the spinous portion of the dorsal fin that are not incised, a smooth margin of the preopercle, a pelvic fin with the first ray produced and equal or slightly longer than the pectoral fin or head, and a deeply forked caudal fin with elongated lobes.
