This species inhabits coral reefs down to depths of 30 meters and is typically solitary in nature. Its diet consists of mollusks, crustaceans, and sea urchins.

The dorsal fin has nine spines and ten rays, while the anal fin has three spines and eight rays. The body depth is 2.3-2.6 times the standard length, and the dorsal profile of the head is convex, especially in large males. The caudal fin is slightly round in juveniles and truncate with elongated, pointed lobes in large males.
