Cheilinus bimaculatus appears to be fairly uncommon and is typically found dwelling in deep waters near K. Ihuru in the Maldives, with specimens being taken at depths of 30-42 m.

habitat and biology
This species is often found on substrates with thick algal growth or in plant-dominated bottoms at depths greater than 15 meters.
distinctive characters
The dorsal fin has nine spines and nine to eleven rays, the anal fin has three spines and eight rays, the pectoral fin has twelve to thirteen rays, and the body depth is two point seven to three point zero in standard length. The caudal fin is round in juveniles, with the upper and some middle rays being prolonged in adults.
