Chaetodon madagaskariensis is a popular aquarium fish that is very closely related to C. mertensii Cuvier of the Pacific Ocean, with the only difference being a detached black spot on its nape.

habitat and biology
Species that consume both plant and animal matter can be found at depths between 10 and 40 meters on the reef.
distinctive characters
This species has a dorsal fin with 13 spines and 20-21 rays, an anal fin with 3 spines and 16-17 rays, and a pectoral fin with 15-16 rays. Its body depth is 1.4-1.8 times its standard length, and its snout is subequal to its eye. In large adults, the anal fin is distinctly angular.
