Dark brown, almost black. Black blotch just behind upper end of gill opening. Lips, opercular spine and edges of fins brilliant, neon blue.

habitat and biology
This species is typically found on the edges and inclines of coral reefs, and is known to be a timid omnivore that feeds on algae and the invertebrates associated with it.
distinctive characters
The dorsal fin has 14 spines and 15-17 rays, the anal fin has 3 spines and 16-17 rays, the pectoral fin has 17 rays, and the body depth is 1.6-2.0 times the standard length. Additionally, the preorbital edge has small, subequal spines, and the front of the snout has a U-shaped notch over the upper jaw.
