Tends to favor outer reef areas.
distinctive characters
The first dorsal fin has 8 spines, the second dorsal fin has 1 spine and 22-24 rays, the anal fin has 2 detached spines followed by 1 spine and 18-20 rays, and the gill rakers on the first gill arch including the rudiments are 27-40. The breast is completely scaled, adults have a lower jaw that is somewhat enlarged and projects beyond the upper jaw, and the posterior part of the lateral line has 11-18 relatively small scutes.
