This species, previously known as Carangoides gymnostethoides, is not commonly found in the Maldives, but it has been occasionally caught by deep hand-line and bottom long lines. This report constitutes the first published record of its occurrence in the Maldives.

habitat and biology
This species is semi-demersal, typically found at depths greater than 20 m. Adult specimens are usually solitary, while juveniles tend to form small schools. Its diet consists of crustaceans, cephalopods and fish.
distinctive characters
The first dorsal fin has 8 spines, the second dorsal fin has 1 spine and 28-32 rays, the anal fin has 2 detached spines followed by 1 spine and 24-26 rays, the breast is naked from behind the pelvic origin to the pectoral origin, and adults have a mouth cleft at the level of the lower margin of the eye.
