habitat and biology
This species is commonly seen in educational institutions located on rocky and coral reefs, but it can also be found in offshore banks up to a depth of 100 m. Its diet mainly consists of invertebrates and fish.
distinctive characters
The first dorsal fin has 8 spines, the second dorsal fin has 1 spine and 25-30 rays, the anal fin has 2 detached spines followed by 1 spine and 21-26 rays, and the total gill rakers (including rudiments) on the first gill arch are 22-27. The profile of the head and nape is slightly angular, becoming more steep with age, and the mouth cleft of adults is distinctly below eye level.
