The many golden spots on the sides of Carangoides ferdau give it its Dhivehi name "Dhabaru handhi" (Rusty Trevally), even though there are other species with more conspicuous orange markings.

habitat and biology
This species inhabits coastal waters, usually at depths ranging from 5 to 60 meters. It is semi-demersal and can be found either alone or in small groups. Its diet consists of crustaceans and small fish.
distinctive characters
The first dorsal fin has 8 spines, the second dorsal fin has 1 spine and 26-34 rays, the anal fin has 2 detached spines followed by 1 spine and 21-26 rays, and the gill rakers on the first gill arch including the rudiments are 24-29. The snout is bluntly rounded, and the breast is naked ventrally to the origin of the pelvic fins, with a naked patch at the base of the pectoral fin.
