Frequently encountered in deeper coastal waters, but seldom near the shoreline.
distinctive characters
The first dorsal fin has 8 spines, the second dorsal fin has 1 spine and 20-23 rays, the anal fin has 2 spines followed by 1 spine and 16-20 rays, and the gill rakers on the first gill arch including the rudiments are 21-25. The naked area of the breast extends beyond the pelvic fins, and the soft dorsal lobe is filamentous in young but shorter than the head length in adults.
