Apogon nigrofasciatus has been called A. aroubiensis Hombron and Jacquinot, but their description is not identifiable. It is very similar to Apogon angustatus, but in that species the pale interspaces are broader than the dark stripes.

habitat and biology
This species of coral reef is typically found either alone or in pairs on shallow, flat reefs in outer lagoons, reaching depths of up to 18 meters. During the day, they rest in crevices or under ledges, and come out at night to feed on small benthic invertebrates.
