Apogon abrogramma is a common species in the Maldives belonging to the subgenus Pristiapogon, which contains several similar looking species, and is one of the few marine fish families in which oral brooding is found.

Species of coral reef are most commonly found in shallow lagoons with coral outcrops.
distinctive characters
The first dorsal fin has seven spines, the second dorsal fin has one spine and nine rays, the anal fin has two spines and six rays, and the preopercle edge is serrate. The supramaxilla is absent.
