habitat and biology
Predominantly found in benthic, coastal and surface waters up to a depth of 100 m, these creatures employ their luring apparatus to draw in fish and crustaceans which they then feed on.
distinctive characters
The first dorsal fin spine is free and modified as a lure, the second and third dorsal fins are also free from the rest of the fins, well-developed and covered by skin, with 12-13 dorsal rays. The pectoral fin lobe is elongated and leg-like, and the gill opening is restricted to a small pore located behind and below the pectoral fin base. Additionally, the caudal peduncle is absent, with the dorsal and anal fins joined to the base of the caudal fin.
