Maldive anemonefish

The common Maldivian Anemonefish, Amphiprion nigripes, is much sought after by aquarists, leading to some reefs, particularly near Malé, being stripped of this species. Additionally, this species has been recorded as rare in Sri Lanka and the Laccadives.

Orange, lower side of chest blackish. A single white transverse band, a little less than eye diameter in breadth; the white band edged with black. Pelvic and anal fins black. Dorsal, caudal and pectoral fins yellow.

habitat and biology
Heteractis magnifica, usually located on the edges of reefs, is always associated with giant sea anemones. These anemones are known to be aggressive towards the fish that feed on them, as they are omnivorous.

This fish has a dorsal fin with 10-11 spines and 17-18 rays, an anal fin with 2 spines and 13-15 rays, 18-19 pectoral rays, a body depth of 2.0-2.2 in standard length, a maxillary that reaches to below the front border of the eye, a pectoral fin that is shorter than the head, and a pelvic fin that is slightly shorter than the pectoral fin.
