Amblygobius semicinctus is very common in the sheltered lagoons of Maldivian islands and ring reefs, and the Gobiidae family is the largest family of marine fishes in the world, with approximately 220 genera and 1,600 species, of which around 160 genera and 1,200 species are found in the Indo-Pacific region.

habitat and biology
Frequently seen in sheltered, shallow lagoons, this creature digs its own burrow and is usually found in pairs. Its diet consists of filamentous algae, small crustaceans, and other minuscule creatures.

The first dorsal fin has six spines, the second dorsal fin has one spine and thirteen to fifteen rays, the anal fin has one spine and twelve to sixteen rays, the pectoral fin has eighteen to twenty-two rays, the gill arch has finger-like projections, there are ten to fifteen short vertical papillae rows under the eye, and the operculum has several scales dorsally.
