habitat and biology
The species is usually encountered in outer reef areas at depths of up to 70 m, where it congregates in loose groups. Its diet consists mainly of zooplankton, which it consumes while hovering above the seafloor.

The dorsal fin has nine spines and 23-26 rays, the anal fin has three spines and 23-26 rays, and the pectoral rays are 17. The body is moderately elongate with a depth of about 2.3 and a snout length of 7.9-8.2 in standard length, and the mouth is small. The caudal fin is lunate.
