Acanthurus lineatus is a very common inhabitant of shallow reef flats, and is popular among aquarists and divers due to its beautiful markings. It is also known for its apparently venomous caudal spine.

This species of coral reefs or rocky substrates found in shallow waters is exposed to wave action. It feeds on benthic algae and is known to be very territorial and aggressive.

The dorsal fin has nine spines and 27-29 rays, the anal fin has three spines and 25-28 rays, the pectoral rays are sixteen, and the adult body depth is approximately 2.2 times the standard length. Additionally, the caudal peduncle spine is very long and the caudal fin is lunate.
